BIG Alliance programme: Fusion mentoring, CoRe programme

Which of our volunteering programmes or projects have you taken part in?
I have taken part in the Fusion Mentoring and CoRe Programme.

Why did you decide to volunteer on these specific programmes?

The unique opportunity of the CoRe programme to work with local charities and put my professional skillset to use really appealed to me. Furthermore, working with a charity which was aligned to my personal interests was also engaging. After a great experience on the Core Programme, I decided to volunteer for Fusion Mentoring as a way to continue my involvement with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and connection with BIG Alliance.

How did you find these programmes? What did you enjoy?
The CoRe Programme was extremely rewarding. It requires commitment over 6 months, however during that time you build good relationships with the charity and other volunteers. The output we achieved as a team and the difference we made to the charity were gratifying. Not only was I able to learn about the charity, I was also able to use my skills to provide meaningful input and help the charity with their operational challenges from my skillset. The highlight of the programme was obtaining additional funding for the charity from the Macquarie Foundation, seeing this makes a real difference to their efforts.

What do you feel you’ve achieved as a result of volunteering with BIG Alliance?
Volunteering with BIG Alliance has given me the opportunity to put my professional skills to use in a meaningful way, continuing to develop them outside the workplace. There is a sense of fulfilment when you see the charity or individual flourish from your advice. Not only have I been able to share advice and my experiences, in turn I have also learnt from my mentee. The two-way learning experience has been invaluable and I have built a long term relationship with my mentee.

What advice would you give to your colleagues who are thinking about volunteering?

I would strongly encourage colleagues to get involved with volunteering opportunities. There is something for everyone, whether it be one-to-one mentoring or working with local charities to offer your time and skills. The experience is extremely rewarding, and I can guarantee you will learn something new!
